F: So you’d like me to say we’re in a relationship, right?

Z: No, really, I want you to do what you want to do.

F: OK, but you want me to say it, right?

Z: You know, it’s up to you. I like you, and it would be nice to call you my ‘boyfriend’ —

F: Ah! Ah! So you do want that.

Z: It would be nice but I don’t want you to change your relationship status because I want you to.

F: Ah, so you do want me to change it!

And on and on we went. He would insist on the topic until he finally heard it – that yes, I like him and like the idea of he and I being “in a relationship” – then he would backpedal. At this point, I told him, I don’t expect anything as I know he’s very much in a decisive stage. He’s clearly caught between wanting a relationship with me and feeling like a relationship equates a loss of freedom for him:

F: I was angry about my last relationship because after we broke up, I realized I had always done what she wanted to do, and not what I wanted to do. And I want to be free.
